Discrepancy in the dates of Baasha's reign
1Ki 15:33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years.
1Kings 16:6 Baasha rested with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah. And Elah his son succeeded him as king.
1Kings 16:8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel, and he reigned in Tirzah two years.
2Ch 16:1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
The text in 2Chronicles 15:19 and 2Chronicles 16:1 says it was the thirty-fifth and thirty- sixth year of Asa’s reign. This must have been a copying error since King Baasha of the northern kingdom of Israel only lived until the 26th year of Asa’s reign (1Kings 16:5-8). He was followed by Elah, who reigned two years, Zimri, who reigned 7 days, and then Omri, who reigned twelve years. 1Kings 16:29 then says, “In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years” (NIV). Every other date in 1Kings 15 and 16 and 2Chronicles 16 regarding Asa’s reign appears to be in chronological order. Therefore perhaps, the 35th (15:19) and the 36th (16:1) may have been misread by the copiers for the 15th and 16th years of King Asa’s reign (The Bible Knowledge Commentary of the O.T., by Walvoord and Zuck, ©1985, p.632). |
