A Double Portion of Elijah's Spirit

According to The Bible Knowledge Commentary of the Old Testament, edited by Walvoord and Zuck, ©1985, p.540, Elisha was asking for the rights of the firstborn, but he was not asking for property, power, or position—Elisha was asking for a double portion of Elijah's spirit to fall on him, that is, he was asking for spiritual blessings. He needed the spiritual commitment and fervency which Elijah possessed.

Why does Elisha call Elijah his father?

Father was a term of respect and endearment.

Youth Mauled by Bears

The Hebrew word for “little” (KJV) or “youth” (NIV) can mean worthless young men, and probably does not mean children. They might have been rebellious youths from Israel who did not like their new prophet anymore than they liked their old one, or it could be they were Baal worshippers. Because they showed such disdain for God's prophet, it was as though they were showing disdain for the LORD, which by God's law was punishable by death (Exodus 22:28; 1Kings 21:13). Two bears came and mauled these forty-two youths (likely a mass demonstration against Elisha and his God), and these rebels died.
