Sennacherib or a Babylonian king? Isaiah 14:22, 25 How do we know Isaiah refers to Sennacherib the Assyrian king and not a Babylonian king? Isaiah 14:22 is connected with Isaiah 14:25. Isaiah 14:22 (NIV) says, “‘I will rise up against them,’ declares the LORD Almighty. ‘I will cut off from Babylon her name and survivors, her offspring and descendants,’ declares the LORD.” Isaiah 14:25 (NIV) says, “‘I will crush the Assyrian [emphasis mine] in my land; on my mountains I will trample him down. His yoke will be taken from my people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.’” When would God crush the Assyrians in the land of Israel? It would happen when Sennacherib tries to wipe out the nation of Judah. King Hezekiah of Judah would teach the people of Judah to rely upon the LORD, and God would slaughter the Assyrian army overnight. Sennacherib would return to his own country only to be assassinated.
