What are Proverbs?
Proverbs are poetical sayings that are usually true. Most of the time they are written in couplets. One line will make a statement about wisdom or foolishness, righteousness or wickedness, or perhaps industriousness or laziness and connect it to the second line. Line one will often be connected to line two with comparative words such as “like” or “as” (similes) or relate it to an object or animal (a metaphor). Sometimes line two says the same thing as line one using different words that mean the same thing (synonymous parallelism, e.g. Proverbs 1:2; 2:11). Sometimes line two expands the thought of line one (synthetic parallelism, e.g. Proverbs 3:6; 16:3). Sometimes line two contrasts with the thought and/ or words of line one (antithetic parallelism, e.g. Proverbs 10:1; 11:1). Occasionally, there are three or more lines added, usually in the case of synthetic parallelism.
