Sackcloth and Ashes
Although it is not explicitly stated in the book of Esther, Mordecai probably sought God and prayed to him. In the Jewish culture of that time, wearing sackcloth (an uncomfortable garment is worn in humility) and throwing ashes upon one ’ s own head were signs of grief . Sackcloth and ashes were often accompanied by repentance, fasting, and prayer (Daniel 9:3-4; Jonah 3:5-9).
If the book of Esther was composed in Persia, perhaps the words “God” and “prayer” were not mentioned in fear of their captors. What do we do when we experience severe threats to our very existence? Do we humble ourselves and seek God?
